The Right Way to Repair Body Damage with Rattle Can Spray Paint

Most of us probably use spray paint for small projects around the house. We might even be tempted to try repairing body damage on our vehicle with the old rattle can. But we’ve all seen the results of a botched spray bomb touch-up going down the road. And it usually isn’t pretty.

The problem isn’t that you can’t paint bodywork from a spray can – it’s the way you do it that matters. In this video, Adam repairs damage on his pickup truck tailgate caused by a hit-and-run incident. It’s minor damage, but significant enough that it requires a bit of body filler first.

Watch as Adam preps the damaged area, fills the damage correctly, and then primes and paints the entire tailgate. In this case, he’s using Eastwood’s OEM Select aerosol paint, which is an exact match to the factory color code. After applying base coat and mid coat applications, he finished out with Eastwood’s 2K aerosol clear coat. Once cured, he moves on to color sanding and buffing.

As you’ll see, preparation is key to getting great results, as with most other projects. Nevertheless, he encounters the predictable challenges that come with paint – dirt and runs, especially. But you’ll also see how he works through those issues like a master.
