Coolant leaks can be difficult to find and only seem to show up when the engine is hot and it’s quite dangerous. If you want to check for coolant leaks the most efficient and safe way we suggest using a Coolant Pressure Testing Kit. The process for checking for leaks using this kit is quite simple and you can do it in minutes at home! Read more about how to do this test yourself below.
- Allow your coolant system to cool down to room temperature before attempting to use your kit.
- Remove Coolant reservoir or radiator cap and check the rubber seal and mounting tabs for any visual damage.
- Install The Pump Pressure cap (or adapter that matches the original) from the kit and make sure it is securely tightened down in place of the coolant cap you removed.
- Begin Pumping the pressure pump watching the gauge slowly rise. Pump until the manufacturers coolant cap pressure is met. Do not exceed the pressure rating for your original cap!
- After reaching the maximum pressure watch the gauge and take note if the gauge drops in pressure rapidly or in less than 60 seconds. This will give you confirmation their is a coolant leak.
- With pressure still in the system go around your cooling system using a LED flashlight to look for any signs of coolant leaks or bubbles. Note those areas before removing the pressure.
- Remove pressure from pump and repair coolant leak. Then test again to assure there are no other leaks. Often times leaks will pop up after a repair on an older car as your repair the “weak links”.
- Remove Pressure adapter and cap and install the permanent cap back onto the vehicle. Make sure the coolant level is full before closing the hood.
