How to Maintain a Scroll-Type Air Compressor

If you’ve ever experienced the near-silent operation of a scroll-type air compressor, you know what a game-changer they can be. Whether you’re using one at home or in a business environment, they make a very attractive alternative to noisy piston-style compressors. Not only are they quiet, but they’re also capable of run continuously (100% duty cycle).

However, scroll compressors may require a more attentive owner to ensure they operate at peak performance. As moisture condenses, it must be removed from both the air and the compressor’s internal lubrication system. Unlike most standard air compressors, many scroll-type units feature an external moisture separator that needs to be maintained.

Unchecked moisture separators can become damaged from overheating, blowing out when internal pressure builds up. And if the water is not drained from the oil reservoir routinely, it can contaminate the oil, leading to bearing failure. Because of these potential risks, owners should develop a more deliberate maintenance routine.

Follow the guidelines below to keep a scroll compressor running safely and effectively, according to your machine’s owner’s manual:

Daily

  • Drain the air tank to remove any moisture
  • Check oil level and condition, looking for any signs of moisture contamination such as milky-looking oil

Monthly

  • Check the fluid level in the moisture drain
  • Drain any condensate in the overflow bottle
  • Check the function of the intake air filter to ensure good flow
  • If equipped, confirm proper operation of the automatic moisture drain system

Annually

  • Change oil and oil filter
  • Replace moisture separator

Additional Tips

  • Maintain a log service dates and take notes on the volume and condition of any fluids removed
  • Keep a copy of your machine’ owner’s manual and service guide in a folder attached to the compressor
  • Use only recommended replacement parts, service kits, and other consumables
