How Do I Prep a Surface for Polyurethane Paint?

If you are tackling any auto body project that involves applying a coat or more of polyurethane paint, it is important to know how to properly prepare your surface area. The first thing you need to do is gather your materials, which include: a PRE paint solution, 400 to 600 grit sandpaper, and some dry, lint-free hand towels. Also, be sure to have your urethane, epoxy or any other type of primer surfacer ready for application after you properly prep the surface of your vehicle. Once you have the tools you need, the prep process is simple.

The first step in prepping the surface area of your vehicle that you intend to paint with a polyurethane coat is cleaning the surface with your PRE. The PRE solution has a special blend of solvents that will help remove any grease, tar, wax, road grime, silicone, buffing compound and any other surface contaminants that may exist. Apply the PRE with one of your hand towels and dry it with another. Once that is done, abrade the surface area with your 400 to 600 grit sandpaper; this will help the primer, base and any clear coats stick to the body’s surface easier when they are applied. After sanding, finally re-clean the surface with your PRE, and dry it with a fresh hand towel. Now you have successfully prepped the surface of your vehicle for polyurethane paint.
