Think your latest resto project is museum-worthy? If it is, we all might enjoy seeing it someday at the Monterey Museum of Automotive Arts!
Except that the museum’s not built yet.
However, discussions continue about locating the museum on the campus of Monterey Peninsula College. The deal would include a proposal to work together on a Technical School of Automotive Restoration, to be located off campus, as a complement to MPC’s existing auto tech program.
Involved in the discussions is Morris Kindig, Automotive Heritage and Preservation Foundation’s executive director, who raced sports cars at Laguna Seca in the 1960s and 1970s. He said the discussions are an important step toward “restoring and maintaining the treasures of the automobile’s heritage” in an area known for auto racing and vintage car shows, such as the annual Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach.
The 155,000-square-foot museum would house 100 cars and include Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach exhibits, a theater, restaurants, emporium, members club and children’s area. The technical school, with a 75,000-square-foot restoration facility, would be located in Monterey, Marina or Seaside.
Depending on progress, Kindig said groundbreaking on the museum could occur in 2013, for it to be open by August 2015, during the Concours event.
